The leaf-patterned lace shrug in green belongs of the The Enchanted Forest collection, which is the theme of this issue.

<br />
The Valiant Tailoress is not only a knitting magazine, but also includes sewing and crochet patterns for the multicrafters to create entire outfits, rather than just single garments. And with 260 pages, it's more like a beautiful and inspiring coffee table book.<br />
The magazine can be ordered to anywhere in the world through their website <a href="https://www.valiant-tailoress.com/" target="_blank">The Valiant Tailoress</a>.
<br />
The leaf shrug pattern is also available separately as a downloadable PDF on <a href="https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/leaf-shrug" target="_blank">Ravelry</a>.

<br /><br />
It was easy to be inspired by the enchanted forest theme, since there are so many leaf stitch patterns in lace knitting. After choosing one of the most beautiful of them I added some cables to the cuffs, resembling tangled tree branches.
<br /><br />
<img src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZsNni8A7FQM/YXhAzemTVGI/AAAAAAAAEpA/ix9hPFSH1qwLblh7YvChuvceHyRBnxWmQCPcBGAsYHg/s0/VT_Leaf%2BShrug%2B03.jpg" width="500" style="background: transparent;" alt="Green lace shrug" /><br />

<br /><br />
This sample shrug is made in <a href="https://www.sandnes-garn.com/yarn/alpakka-silke">Sandnesgarn Alpakka Silke</a> (shade no. 8264) that contains 70 per cent baby alpaca and 30 per cent mulberry silk.
The shrug is knitted in one piece from cuff to cuff, the sleeves in the round and the back section in between flat.

Made in your favourite colour, it will add that little something to any outfit.
<br />
The design is based on the natural hold and texture of alternating stocking and reverse stocking stitch stripes that are given an uneven organic look.<br />
<br /><br />
<img src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J3RFlw65K-w/YH0mHm5zVQI/AAAAAAAAEhQ/80zdlvaAcDgWvZNzIxGeeNEkKKTO1Kx5gCPcBGAsYHg/s320/crinklie1blog.JPG" width="500" alt="Crinklie scarf" /><br />
<br /><br />
The Crinklie scarf is approximately 10 cm (4 inches) wide and 160 cm (63 inches) long. It requires only about 240 meters (260 yards) of lace weight yarn, which is less than a 50 g skein. Of course, it can be knitted in other sizes and yarn weights as well.<br />
The scarf is easy to make, as it only takes basic knitting and purling and some increasing and decreasing skills, which are explained in the pattern. The pattern also contains both written instructions and charts.
<br /><br />
The pattern is available on <a href="https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/crinklie">Ravelry</a>.

<br /><br />
This sample scarf is knitted in Malabrigo Yarn Silkpaca (shade Piedras) that contains 70 per cent alpaca and 30 per cent silk.
<br /><br /><br />

<br /><br />
Crinklie scarf is perfect as a quick little spring knit to refresh the wardrobe.

Just like I started knitting again after wearing mismatched gloves for an entire winter, I now realised I had a considerably large amount of beading supplies, including many items not really suitable for wearing, yet perfect for making colourful stitch markers.
<br /><br />
<img src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zdRM8xpXLtc/YCuSAllLmnI/AAAAAAAAEfI/VlooKv9pjrobYlokUv8Q1lh2GSbwSSjSwCPcBGAsYHg/s320/DSC08415blog.JP" width="500" alt="Copper and glass bead stitch markers {tettidesign}" /><br />
<br /><br />
These markers can now be chosen according to needle or yarn colour. Knitting will be even more fun with some bling effect and some of the stitch markers may well double as earrings.
<br /><br />
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH3KLFKbUy30r4c2HoOJzotPsdPXdG-2lPiO7GhnCq-ds92lwnSEvVdmI6qhsqXFNJjr55pb8c3RYw8ezakrfDSqBYfr8UzP7_8NidSzvKgfgcTygjdbsEnOonE2arZMIy4UBg4oHbXMek/s953-no/?authuser=0" width="500" alt="Blue faceted glass bead stitch markers {tettidesign}" /><br />
<br /><br />
I used jump rings, closable earring hooks and lobster clasps, the latter will be great as row markers. Just have to test, which types work best.
<br /><br />

<br /><br />
No more plastic markers in terrible colours that clash with every knitwork.

There is more time for hobbies and crafts, to either continue with an old favourite or learn a completely new skill. Making something is truly rewarding and the process can be calming, while taking your mind off the constant news about the pandemic escalation.
<br />
I am so glad I have my knitting and a yarn stash that needs to be reduced. Everything feels all right, when you have a soft ball of wool in your hand.
<br /><br />
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgthAtnlX_R7faqcrhImR6b70CrLSjlR-swYA9VF10EAzp8NOURup9lB-Ksv2sMuzHbw7eoyPw0LckaLiPWDU9aHrF-oqBGv7MEY4Ol70ytrPtqPxgS8zZYxb3P9jNeCU0qwQyW7X1Vwps/s1600/colourful_yarn_ball.jp" width="500" alt="Colourful yarn ball {tettidesign}" /><br />
<br /><br />
Even <a href="https://www.craftscouncil.org.uk/stories/4-reasons-craft-good-your-mental-health">research</a> shows that crafting is good for mental health, helping to reduce anxiety, lower stress and improve mood. Making something requires focus, which helps to distract from worries and keep us in the present moment, exercising mindfulness.
<br /><br />
And it looks like people are aware of this, either consciously or subconsciously. Perhaps they always wanted to make things, but never found the time for it. During the first coronavirus outbreak period in spring, many had to leave work and stay home, and were thus faced with unexpected free time in their hands. Craft supply stores experienced a large growth in online trade, some even saw sales go up more than <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-lockdown-arts-and-crafts-boon-sees-firms-online-sales-triple-12041566">200 per cent</a> or revenue from yarn sales surge by <a href="https://www.essentialretail.com/news/lovecrafts-in-lockdown/">140 per cent</a>. People were also much more interested in craft patterns and DIY instructions.
<br /><br />
This interest growth is also visible in online searches. The interest in crafts usually rises from autumn to Christmas time each year and then lowers towards spring and summer, but this year quite a 'bump' can be seen for the spring lockdown period in March-April, based on <a href="https://trends.google.com/trends">Google Trends</a>:
<br /><br />
<script type="text/javascript" src="https://ssl.gstatic.com/trends_nrtr/2402_RC03/embed_loader.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> trends.embed.renderExploreWidget("TIMESERIES", {"comparisonItem":[{"keyword":"knitting","geo":"","time":"2020-01-01 2020-12-31"},{"keyword":"crafts","geo":"","time":"2020-01-01 2020-12-31"},{"keyword":"crochet","geo":"","time":"2020-01-01 2020-12-31"}],"category":0,"property":""}, {"exploreQuery":"date=2020-01-01%202020-12-31&q=knitting,crafts,crochet","guestPath":"https://trends.google.com:443/trends/embed/"}); </script>
<br /><br />
The current growing outbreak period is yet too early to analyse and also hard to distinguish from the above mentioned annual interest rise.
<br /><br /><br />
Crafts are one of the great ways to overcome a period when the activities of the normal daily routine have fallen off. So stay safe and make something. Something great, something you always wanted to.

Part two.The Creativa fair also had special sections dedicated to beads, garden goodness, teddies and dolls. These events took up less space, but were very popular as well. <br />
The garden part of the fair, LandGarten, consisted mainly of plant related home decor, handmade food, and of course, the Dutch flower bulbs.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-1xwOxVSLMRw/UzlagGW09eI/AAAAAAAADuI/ZZTTP-AN6r0/s800/tettidesign_creativa_2014_landgarten_lavendel.jpg" width="500" alt="Creativa 2014: LandGarten" /><br />
<br />
<br />
Both beads and handmade jewellery could be admired at the PerlenExpo. Bead shopping was probably one of the favourite activities of the fair visitors. This was truly an amazing chance to see (and touch!) so many bead and gem strands, as one usually has to rely only on the web shop pictures.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0UkBUBmBiOA/UzlagL78KvI/AAAAAAAADuA/p1ZFucZOCVw/s800/tettidesign_creativa_2014_perlenexpo_2.jpg" width="500" alt="Creativa 2014: PerlenExpo" /><br />

<br />
Dolls and teddies on display seemed to be more of the kind that were intended for adult collectors. There were only a few stands with miniatures; had really been hoping to see more of them. Must probably visit a special miniature event for that.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-72nF_Q4liRs/UzlgaemYmXI/AAAAAAAADxE/9YZpFgh07RE/s800/tettidesign_creativa_2014_puppen_b%25C3%25A4renmarkt_3.jpg" width="500" alt="Creativa 2014: Puppen- und Bärenmarkt" /><br />
<br />
<br />
Last but not least, Kenya as the guest country of the fair this year was represented by an exhibition of Kenyan textiles, so colourful, sunny, and exotic.<br />
<br />

<br />
Went back to the fair on Sunday morning, only one thing in mind: shopping. Of course, I couldn't find everything I had set my eyes on the previous day (for instance, a sewing themed coffee mug I had already taken into daily use in my mind). Nevertheless, my bag was certainly many times heavier when coming back.<br />
This photo shows all the lovely things I managed to bring home. They just look to good to store away, let alone open, cut, use... Some items were gifts from the goodie bag given to bloggers, which was a very nice surprise.<br />

Part one.Have you ever dreamt about being in a place, where you could browse beautiful creative supplies on endless counters, instead of visiting just that one local store or going through several online shops to find the right things? I certainly would have, if I'd known such place existed. But I found myself being there last weekend – at the <a href="http://www.westfalenhallen.de/messen/creativa/en/index.php">Creativa</a> fair in Dortmund, a real crafters' paradise.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-qefSYDXopqY/UzQItiq_prI/AAAAAAAADXU/bq923TbaQNI/s800/tettidesign_creativa_2014_villa_landleben_1.JPG" width="500" alt="Creativa 2014: Villa Landleben" /><br />

Didn't quite know what to expect beforehand: handmade products or supplies to make them. Turned out, both were abundantly represented, perhaps with a greater emphasis on the latter. It is an impossible task to list all the things on display, the word everything covers it most accurately. Or all from wool and fabric to paper and wood and the rest that falls in between. And beads, and tools, and paints, and...<br />

<br />
Even just walking through the six vast exhibition halls was an accomplishment in itself. Almost certainly visited all of them. Trying to see everything (about 700 stands) and remember where you'd already been usually proved to be a hopeless attempt. As soon as you start admiring a pretty booth, all sense of direction is lost.<br />

There are probably two possible strategies to tackle such events.<br />
One could be a super organised visitor equipped with a layout plan, marking down the aisles gone through and taking notes.<br />
The other, and much easier way, is to just go with the flow. And from about noon onwards on Saturday and Sunday, there wasn't much else to do. No wonder, as altogether 85.000 people visited this Europe's largest creative design fair during five days. It's actually very heartwarming to see more and more people get infected with the craft virus. <br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-geJrjKlliAI/UzQqwjElc8I/AAAAAAAADYg/0kLkwUvA7CY/s1600/tettidesign_creativa_2014_scrapbooking_1.jpg" width="500" alt="Creativa 2014: Scrapbooking supplies" /><br />
<br />
<br />
In addition to passive looking and active shopping opportunities, many workshops took place where visitors were able to try new and old craft techniques: sewing, knitting, scrapbooking, beading, making bobbin lace, spinning wool, to name only a few.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuMGpJqI4DB-KhVRbvHBUvXTSG_A_96i2wvk_KmtyzvacVHVVqO-bVwB169IhxyjL5LxmcIDfDcMojjQP9qMnLRY1_Kp_lvkovjzzcAOJGlU8ulZkTm5VpsaK4qDVuLg_1-bei6VJ4R1CV/s800/tettidesign_creativa_2014_workshop_1.jpg" width="500" alt="Creativa 2014: Workshop" /><br />
<br />
<br />
The catwalk events added excitement and fashion show feeling. Here the <a href="http://www.sabrina-strickjournal.de">Sabrina</a> knitting magazine is presenting the playful designs from their latest issue.<br />

This time, I only had to make half the work – a new skirt for this pincushion doll. As far as I know, the hand painted half doll figurine is made in Germany in the 1920s. It's really tiny, only about 6 cm tall.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-itOZYKeqMcE/UyiAvQdtxDI/AAAAAAAADV4/ecJ7KYLF5FY/s1600/tettidesign_antique_pincushion_doll.jpg" width="500" alt="Antique pincushion doll {tettidesign}" /><br />
<br />
<br />
Of course, it was not just the skirt. Beneath it is the cushion part that makes her stand up, stuffed with synthetic filling. I also had to add some small stones for weight, so the doll wouldn't fall over. This must be the reason why most pincushion dolls have very wide dresses.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1cEMMOAgmms/UyiAveUjPYI/AAAAAAAADVw/okuLuPWEzUU/s1600/tettidesign_pincushion_half_doll.jpg" width="500" alt="Pincushion half doll {tettidesign}" /><br />
<br />
<br />
The skirt was made of all the bits and pieces I could find in colours matching the blouse and hat. It's not in twenties' style but perhaps, she is a country girl not wearing the latest fashion. More is more, when it comes to romantic ruffles in this case.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Still haven't put any pins into the skirt, she is only adapting to her new environment.<br />

A simple tin gets a romantic transformation with some lace, tulle and bling jewellery.<br />
<br />
<img alt="Romantic pincushion in a tin {tettidesign}" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIJGBEvrzhEl_-2pPC02G5qf74aUvCuq4VA65u6JgfD_RnI_tLku1uN4TvOMZ6ncLL6Fkchs9uykfP1gvrk32z1-uqxJbWZQY1CowavOYzjWppzY56Dukw2o3vy3c-UdomM6oTmEsXH80/s800/tettidesign_tin_and_tulle_pincushion_1.jpg" width="500" /><br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Materials and tools needed for the project:</b> scissors, small empty tin, fabric and tulle scraps, ribbons, filling, vintage jewellery pieces or beads, rhinestones, etc.<br />
<br />
<img alt="Romantic pincushion in a tin {tettidesign}" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN3v5R6TRb_7T2HmNe6A2BOrlgEjqsX2W3EirrkMTP7Whyvr850AeDzcq7a7jgpFaAS3DM-6paFKUcnHuFS3soc4KziBxyLURXid2ySOm5zBBvSuGCtHtyE_WgMUlJHpFyFyVQSW1BBpU/s800/tettidesign_tin_and_tulle_pincushion_2.jpg" width="500" /><br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Making process:</b><br />
<ol><li>Cut a round piece of fabric with a diameter at least twice the size of the tin. (I used lace and a second thicker fabric underneath.)</li>
<li>Put some filling in the middle of the fabric, gather the edges and tie with a ribbon or thread. Tuck it into the tin with the tied side downwards.</li>
<li>Cut a round piece of tulle and put the tin in the middle of this piece. Gather the edges and put a ribbon around it. Arrange the tulle or cut the edges smoother, if necessary.</li>
<li>Stick some bling jewellery pieces into the ribbon knot. Voilà!</li>
</ol><br />

I was hoping to take some nice snowy pictures of them, but it's raining instead. <br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-rxwxMmaLhPQ/UwRJ19NMUcI/AAAAAAAADOg/MURIyjtdYv0/s1600/tettidesign_estonian_mittens_1.jpg" width="500" alt="Estonian mittens {tettidesign}" /><br />
<br />
<br />
The main stitch pattern is from the recently published <a href="http://www.apollo.ee/suur-kindaraamat.html?___store=en&___from_store=et">book of Estonian mittens</a> from the collections of Estonian National Museum. There are more than 300 examples of old mittens in the book, accompanied by colourwork patterns (stitch patterns only, no full instructions).<br />
Mittens with this particular pattern found their way into the museum in 1920.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-AgeIdyiyEdo/UwRJ19K65eI/AAAAAAAADOY/QgGyh_bcUx8/s800/tettidesign_estonian_mittens_2.jpg" width="500" alt="Estonian mittens {tettidesign}" /><br />
<br />
<br />
These thumbs are not traditional, but have a gusset like fingered gloves. I think they are more comfortable and easier to make. I wanted to use these yarns, although the brown and dark grey stripes should have more contrast. Colours from the wider stripes in just a slightly lighter shade would probably work best for this pattern.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QD-QN3LVV_o/UwRJ1gJkPhI/AAAAAAAADOc/VVMdpkQhEF0/s800/tettidesign_estonian_mittens_3.jpg" width="500" alt="Estonian mittens {tettidesign}" /><br />
<br />
<br />
This kind of zigzag wrist section is also quite traditional and widely used. The mittens are incredibly warm because of the stranded colourwork. Don't think I've had a pair since childhood, had completely forgotten about that. Next winter, used they will be.<br />

Time to wear warm wool and use crystals to brighten up the slowly lengthening days.<br />

Otherwise there will be no new yarn, no matter how pretty the colour. <br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ZYqDlfQ5ct4/Ut_W87nDUtI/AAAAAAAADG8/VYLWB2Oyg90/s800/tettidesign_knitted_sock_detail.jpg" width="500" alt="Knitted socks {tettidesign}" /><br />
<br />
<br />
This is an improvised pair of socks, worked from top down. The heel is a classical one with picked up stitches, the strongest and most comfortable, in my opinion. But I do prefer starting from the toe, as that is so much less stressful - no fear of running out of yarn or having leftovers. The latter is what happened this time.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OqlY_ShQ2_o/Ut_W81lM4mI/AAAAAAAADHA/mM1g_CfRuPs/s800/tettidesign_knitted_socks.jpg" width="500" alt="Knitted socks {tettidesign}" /><br />
<br />
<br />
The socks are made of Admiral Bambus by Schoppel-Wolle, with 75 per cent wool and 25 per cent bamboo content. While working, the yarn seems somewhat like cotton, but becomes much softer after washing. In the end, it has a really nice natural feel, like it should be. Just love this warm colour scheme.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-K0wQx4vFZ6c/Ut_W8zgl51I/AAAAAAAADHE/dhYtArnyfEw/s800/tettidesign_admiral_bambus_sockenwolle.jpg" width="500" alt="Knitted socks {tettidesign}" /><br />
<br />
<br />
After a long search, I found these lovely sheepish wooden sock blockers on <a href="http://whorldropspindle.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=78">Whorl Drop Spindle</a>, a great place for handmade spindles and other wooden wool tools. (One day I will try spinning.)<br />

I'm hoping it will make me go out with the camera more often and notice something new. This is also a kind of investigative experiment to see if such boards actually help to generate new ideas and bring about real projects. And I love playing with colours. <br />
If someone else finds inspiration in these mishmashes, that will be a reward in itself.<br />
<br />
Although the first snowflakes have started to fall and this extended autumn is probably coming to an end, January has looked a lot like this so far.<br />

I thought it to be more fun if they looked like real kitchen staff.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bCnDDJLoE1E/UftUt6fEyZI/AAAAAAAAC9c/Zg4Ble4vyEs/s800/tettidesign_peg_dolls_kitchen_maids_1.jpg" width="500" alt="Peg doll kitchen maids {tettidesign}" /><br />
<br />
<br />
After a short training period, I'm sure, I will not be needed in the kitchen at all. The three girls can work out a schedule among themselves, and each gets to be in charge of one meal a day.<br />
<br />

<br />
And they always work with a smile.<br />

These other type of clothespins come handy, too, to snap smaller bags and packages.<br />

The green spot is in full bloom now, the grass has been cut and weeds pulled for the photo shoot.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-mLcJrtdZP-0/UdKrviev2GI/AAAAAAAAC3o/kowfZwpyGsA/s800/tettidesign_miniature_cottage_6.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature craft cottage" /><br />
<br />
<br />
Thanks to the warm and sunny weather this summer, it seems like the apples have ripened early. An apple for everyone willing to do some raking!<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-USKxc9zln3Q/UdKruecT-NI/AAAAAAAAC3I/EFbHkF3t1Zk/s800/tettidesign_miniature_cottage_2.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature craft cottage" /><br />
<br />
<br />
The green, green grass of home is actually an old towel painted with brush. The idea was found on <a href="http://minttumeirami.blogspot.com/2012/02/puutarhassa-vihertaa-ruoho.html">Minttumeirami's blog</a>, the tutorial is in Finnish only, but with many great pictures.<br />
The garden path is made of real gravel (intended for aquariums) that has been glued to the cardboard base.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGJ4-M5cVZI_PY7sW2K6IFy8Sk6AUVaioi8AbDVfRPni_gMHZc_HwnyIpo1lxt0vVK92LKTX5M6cCAgYOujYktQf5uDZhnm7ax58nK3Oh-RMQm20o6h8e5Fv7dkl03XnZbbwqGmwkXATM/s800/tettidesign_miniature_cottage_5.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature craft cottage" /><br />
<br />
<br />
The trellis consists of natural wood, i.e. small branches from the forest. The climbing plant is probably a Clematis. The leaves are cut out with a leaf shaped punch and winded between thin double wire.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEkJnPJABNLi89kFzeSSMc17opf_8SOAP5vhom2m3ktPABAvcyf6iuKxRPq1-nq34HL1HR5PLxYMjKTzr1OPPM2UJw-84lD0t5mEd-R-25MwuTszwgtw6NZ-nwlesGxyPtmEi6naqfnik/s800/tettidesign_miniature_cottage_8.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature craft cottage" /><br />
<br />
<br />
These are real driftwood shingles covering the cottage roof - not at all easy to cut with a kitchen knife. Should have looked for a miniature axe.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-VtflGEkLS3Q/UdKruVhPB8I/AAAAAAAAC3M/tpU1gqAl1gk/s800/tettidesign_miniature_cottage_3.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature craft cottage" /><br />
<br />
<br />
The cottage, formerly known as shoe box, is glued onto double cardboard. This tiny world now exists on the bookshelf next to gardening books.<br />

<br />
<br />
When the night falls, the lantern will give a little light to the garden. Twilight is always the perfect time to think about the day gone bye and the one ahead.<br />

<br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4Ga3snbwJps/UZdsSOtDr9I/AAAAAAAACos/nIgDQOgDNKM/s800/tettidesign_miniature_craft_cottage_sewing_notions.jpg"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4Ga3snbwJps/UZdsSOtDr9I/AAAAAAAACos/nIgDQOgDNKM/s800/tettidesign_miniature_craft_cottage_sewing_notions.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature sewing box" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
The rustic style cottage room decorated in shades of blue and grey is fitted into a cardboard shoe box, which was exactly the right size. Some furniture pieces and tiny accessories are commercial, paper and textile stuff is completely homemade.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yXa0nXfisvs/UZdtyRseoGI/AAAAAAAACpA/OdDOyxK6Gw4/s800/tettidesign_miniature_craft_cottage_room_box.jpg"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yXa0nXfisvs/UZdtyRseoGI/AAAAAAAACpA/OdDOyxK6Gw4/s800/tettidesign_miniature_craft_cottage_room_box.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature craft cottage" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
There is a sketching in progress on the desk and a cork inspiration board on the wall to help with idea generation. Newspaper is waiting to be read and some correspondence to take care of over lunch break.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-iPMhRloM8cs/UZifIZ7W6kI/AAAAAAAACpg/7UMLIqMy9vQ/s800/tettidesign_miniature_desk_sketchbook_corkboard.jpg"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-iPMhRloM8cs/UZifIZ7W6kI/AAAAAAAACpg/7UMLIqMy9vQ/s800/tettidesign_miniature_desk_sketchbook_corkboard.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature desk with sketchbook and inspiration board" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
Toothpicks are so perfect for pencils. Found the idea in the <a href="http://zakkalife.blogspot.com/2011/02/craft-miniature-colored-pencils.html">zakka life</a> blog, there is a great tutorial for making these as well.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5NCOwDZ2pKs/UZih6qlIbuI/AAAAAAAACqY/nBSCLuD0plY/s800/tettidesign_miniature_pencils.jpg"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5NCOwDZ2pKs/UZih6qlIbuI/AAAAAAAACqY/nBSCLuD0plY/s800/tettidesign_miniature_pencils.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature pencils and apple" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
The chest of drawers is made of matchboxes cut in half, legs and pulls are just metallic spacer beads. The stool is made of matches glued together as other small wood material is really hard to find. The stone flooring was quite easy: teared pieces of cardboard glued and painted.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiky2tWv_FkNUiTv1_Kx9ni4QB2g3t4O5oYsJ6BoqkAuP8POLJf52DStAgTDTXfrXBX2PxjcisfZ7-bFnv8mo40Y89na7pnamWYn8F_Ry5jaz4TyOq6EsP6hAPpLDci_g4sbpfNzDEGMjE/s800/tettidesign_miniature_matchbox_chest_stool.jpg"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiky2tWv_FkNUiTv1_Kx9ni4QB2g3t4O5oYsJ6BoqkAuP8POLJf52DStAgTDTXfrXBX2PxjcisfZ7-bFnv8mo40Y89na7pnamWYn8F_Ry5jaz4TyOq6EsP6hAPpLDci_g4sbpfNzDEGMjE/s800/tettidesign_miniature_matchbox_chest_stool.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature matchbox chest of drawers and match stool" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
For the shelf unit, I found a box where the 'shelves' were already there. It's not very strong, but enough to hold the sewing machine and all the supplies, books and notions quite well.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-88eiq_5a2l8/UZijWOw5cSI/AAAAAAAACq4/Y4_lTXdMrqo/s800/tettidesign_miniature_stash_shelves.jpg"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-88eiq_5a2l8/UZijWOw5cSI/AAAAAAAACq4/Y4_lTXdMrqo/s800/tettidesign_miniature_stash_shelves.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature craft room shelves" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
The fabrics are folded over pieces of cardboard and fixed with glue. Same with thread and ribbon on printable cards.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxWRVlpjrFwqiLSkOjCvErh54Jm7hVdGe9qzdlb6zPfRIfmPJExbp9p-UWaqj1LSaVFruhfybYOtZH9-ickvrNMPE3lMSlOPDOQD_hSW84yiEMoIM17jftF_88aAsVRkzRG8mKOm-bgMY/s800/tettidesign_miniature_sewing_fabric_stash.jpg"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxWRVlpjrFwqiLSkOjCvErh54Jm7hVdGe9qzdlb6zPfRIfmPJExbp9p-UWaqj1LSaVFruhfybYOtZH9-ickvrNMPE3lMSlOPDOQD_hSW84yiEMoIM17jftF_88aAsVRkzRG8mKOm-bgMY/s800/tettidesign_miniature_sewing_fabric_stash.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature sewing room fabric stash" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
All the yarn in the stash is real wool in cobweb and lace weights. The chunky knitting basket is crocheted of medium weight cotton.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMNyvXe_nJVot2crK18GFvnBx2JEbi_jcAj6TmJanR5sOBDB20hOTSy8gUXwmZ3xVcz51JNPrBME-Kxb_QsMBKtMS3LH294qdWiZZd9KS-yyAmWSvDhyphenhyphen1IJ3IoLHZVQVLVjT4PzaNfp0M/s800/tettidesign_miniature_knitting_yarn.jpg"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMNyvXe_nJVot2crK18GFvnBx2JEbi_jcAj6TmJanR5sOBDB20hOTSy8gUXwmZ3xVcz51JNPrBME-Kxb_QsMBKtMS3LH294qdWiZZd9KS-yyAmWSvDhyphenhyphen1IJ3IoLHZVQVLVjT4PzaNfp0M/s800/tettidesign_miniature_knitting_yarn.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature knitting basket and yarn stash" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
As for books and magazines - I just diminished the ones from my own collection...<br />
<br />
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-UajOJ4E1HP4/UZinRl2192I/AAAAAAAACrw/H-a0pILU8ac/s800/tettidesign_miniature_books_and_magazines.jpg"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-UajOJ4E1HP4/UZinRl2192I/AAAAAAAACrw/H-a0pILU8ac/s800/tettidesign_miniature_books_and_magazines.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature books and magazines" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
When there is work in progress, coffee must be available at all times, why not serve with style on a silver tray.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-zPF0e8d8V-A/UZiozWHXcLI/AAAAAAAACsQ/0Hp5IOK20dQ/s800/tettidesign_miniature_silver_coffee_set.jpg"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-zPF0e8d8V-A/UZiozWHXcLI/AAAAAAAACsQ/0Hp5IOK20dQ/s800/tettidesign_miniature_silver_coffee_set.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature coffee set" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
For after dark hours and burning the midnight oil, the hanging ceiling light can be switched on. It's a battery LED light, no electricity and wiring needed.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPa65hlp8PqFSGdnerOtW0gCkU5GccgKgqn4LG2bl-tAgPRxd10DGgFjl0SAsjp-whiX69iYcUshp-WUF7x3CxO9lBI7ETQa8gPNGgEdgcHrs-ggfJVRck9moKWluectdANlDrazbHyJ4/s800/tettidesign_miniature_craft_cottage_with_lights_on.jpg"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPa65hlp8PqFSGdnerOtW0gCkU5GccgKgqn4LG2bl-tAgPRxd10DGgFjl0SAsjp-whiX69iYcUshp-WUF7x3CxO9lBI7ETQa8gPNGgEdgcHrs-ggfJVRck9moKWluectdANlDrazbHyJ4/s800/tettidesign_miniature_craft_cottage_with_lights_on.jpg" width="500" alt="Miniature light" /></a><br />

This is a dangling necklace with green jade beads (probably man-made), a carved Mayan stone pendant, and various glass beads joined together with dark bronze tone wire.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8YEhjbDi0uKDoGI5G9pSI-cFbThyphenhyphen4v8eOX7PIp2d4kDDYx12igbSeigxpnjJv4AKeyLZL4whCGBuwPR8bX8DK_56JjzB6F5NL3Vb19xHYA5zPgg__AiICY76-_jRpOtDQs7VzJUDQoRg/s800/tettidesign_green_stone_bronze_necklace_1.jpg" width="500" alt="Green stone necklace" /><br />
<br />
<br />
The necklace is intentionally asymmetric and messy. The circles of cream coloured seed beads add some light and cheer.<br />

Besides, the original plastic cover was just ugly.<br />

The box can be completed in minutes, but it is totally acceptable to spend many hours adding the creative finishing touches.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtvjQjKK0kOzWURNoRb6TTxer45YTbtdhgkwZFoYuwTquKT6KZOBmZPrSBleKUL5hQn-BupAcNtlFAzzeVIe8Y6pCz40dCjF8QQxYe3cmOcQRaGNyAN-h4m-bBmjCJZbD8oTJuhpzyPvc/s800/tettidesign_gift_box_1.jpg" width="500" alt="Paper gift box with a free template" /><br />
<br />
<br />
The size of the completed box will be approximately 6x4x4 cm, when printed on a full A4 or Letter size page. Click on the picture to open the template in .png format:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2TgCUpWSjW-iUsL_nPNraF06LLHrw8LcWocawOPgDrKHYfKhBcokVjYxhIruaTwoevg30YpnD0_AvrEs0is0hodDhSeP7QPYwkrFrZuZSi7u44yIuT95NfjJh8exfPwc0H4VIVw1IBQ0/s1600/tettidesign_free_printable_gift_box_template.png" target="_blank"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXEk1ENf2EYIU_rLyN0zaW8Sl5ugZ78RUdBkFp6nNyjs_q3GvLLBLQdSqFmRvjkrC5B-Sf5ersgON77RT-ek9dl4iNy8qq0zdf_EpLG4of18gyVrmuEFGOAhsJ9kX6aWzGc2AWVgyg1Hc/s800/tettidesign_gift_box_template_thumb.jpg" width="300" alt="Free printable gift box template" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
The printed template can be glued onto heavier paper or cardboard before cutting and folding, leaving it to the inner side of the box. Alternatively, it can be used only for drawing the lines onto decorative paper or cardboard. <br />
<br />
Tip for folding: use a ruler or the edge of the table to get a straight folding line. Smooth and finish the folded edge using something like scissor handles.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-9reakp0Z6TU/UReSXaS_KCI/AAAAAAAACgI/kyGLj56NL0o/s800/tettidesign_gift_box_2.jpg" width="500" alt="Paper gift box with a free template" /><br />
<br />
<br />
The outside of the box can be decorated with paper, fabric, buttons, flowers, embellishments, drawings... anything you like. <br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-NTonX0YoVYc/UReSXxF6BJI/AAAAAAAACgY/ORdV0oPdQcQ/s800/tettidesign_gift_box_3.jpg" width="500" alt="Paper gift box with a free template" /><br />
<br />
<br />
Punch holes where indicated, gather the punched top edges starting with the smaller box sides, and complete with a ribbon. Don't forget to add the gift before that!<br />
<br />
This box is also on <a href="http://craftgawker.com/post/2013/02/11/44708/">CraftGawker</a>.<br />

Clotheshorse is a trendy webzine published three times a year, featuring knitting and crochet patterns in several themed collections with each issue.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-UHjFB2SDFCA/UQpuqk48nDI/AAAAAAAACe0/EoglZhKPOzI/s800/narkissa_gloves_clotheshorse_magazine.jpg" width="300" alt="Narkissa gloves" /><div style="font-family: Tahoma, serif; font-size: 11px; color:#743338;">© Clotheshorse Magazine</div><br />
These are opera length fingerless gloves in wide ribbing (for a perfect fit), decorated with lace insertions at both ends. The gloves are knitted starting from the fingers' end, so it is very convenient to try them on while working.<br />

Unfortunately, most of these are available without images, so one could practice a lot of blind knitting, for example, and wait for the surprise outcome.<br />
Here are a couple of books that have many inspiring pictures along with instructions, though.<br />
<br />
<img width="500" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-i_BnlKL03go/UzleV1n4X5I/AAAAAAAADwo/BlWkkW0V8Ok/s800/beetons_book_of_needlework.jpg" alt="Beeton's Book of Needlework" /><br />
<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://www.gutenberg.org/files/15147/15147-h/15147-h.htm">Beeton's Book of Needlework</a></b> by Isabella Beeton, 1870<br />
<br />
This book contains patterns for tatting, crochet, knitting, netting, embroidery, point lace, guipure d'art, Berlin work, monograms, initials and names, pillow lace, and lace stitches. And 600 engraved illustrations.<br />
<br />
<img width="500" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-560rWsU0kwg/U0VsU8rUbiI/AAAAAAAADyM/-4OrfehYePo/s800/beetons_book_of_needlework_knitted_counterpane.jpg" alt="Beeton's Book of Needlework" /><br />
<br />
<br />
The knitting chapter looks very interesting. Some patterns, e.g. this knitted neckerchief(!) in black Shetland wool, have been added to <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/beetons-book-of-needlework">Ravelry</a> and the project notes can be very helpful for working the shawl.<br />
<br />
<img width="300" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-q_z27hA4iNk/U0Vth_hEDtI/AAAAAAAADyo/T4yKdHsymj8/s800/beetons_book_of_needlework_knitted_neckerchief.jpg" alt="Beeton's Book of Needlework" /><br />
<br />
<br />
Another lovely example, a knitted border with pleats:<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://www.gutenberg.org/files/37456/37456-h/37456-h.htm">Cycling and Shooting Knickerbocker Stockings</a></b> by H. P. Ryder, 1896<br />
<br />
<img width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJhG_xcRRihOMpsiA5YKs4Qa9TN-YXLknNdZ_sfiSS3mMYzR6O5tjik-WxN3Pa1Zuh58yNuYiPdwT-hBYkQVwtaJ3Mc39w9om2ykqgQd5ClIg-U-JYm9Jqr_sTzGqgm2AMqV27m1rbEL-9/s800/Knickerbocker_stockings.jpg" alt="Cycling and Shooting Knickerbocker Stockings" /><br />
<br />
The stockings are worked in ribbing for the most part and decorated with fancy tops. There are many options to choose from for making the top and the stitch patterns come with photos.<br />

I visited the one in Gdansk, Pomerania region of Poland on the Baltic coast - a beautiful place I had wanted to see for a long time. <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
The fair takes place on The Coal Market (<i>Targ Weglowy</i>) near the main railway station and stays open until December 23th. Looking quite empty as pictured here on the opening day, the square filled up with many more fair booths over the next few days.<br />

<br />
<br />
All sorts of Christmas themed decorations and souvenirs, sweets and lollipops, warm socks and fur slippers, and leather goods are to be found. From the catering side, hot sausages and <i>Glühwein </i> is a must to stay warm in the slightly subzero temperatures.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Part of the fair is placed indoors, in the hall next to the market square, and decorated with many colourful light installations.<br />

<br />
<br />
The booth displays are also very colorful and abundant.<br />

<br />
<br />
The warm and festive atmosphere generated by all of those nicely wrapped and displayed items will certainly last longer than the visit itself.<br />

Santa was sitting among his helpers and snowmen, gazing delightedly at the merry visitors around him.<br />

<br />
<br />
After just a short walk in the old town, the inevitable is bound to happen: knitter spotting a yarn shop (Lawendowa St. 2).<br />
<br />
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQK-FVGzFnlRpFrEwzSaxwTnmOZ_GV9rFr18KQdBrLpK7JLZCGMrRPOdz9lLDdVhSix53nCmpW8zcX2CTAnnjBGjEEWcEqQ2GERAXHKvah2OBsH0Z2RzcNEQV0fA1BrSPnk9Y5oEjhzjE/s800/tettidesign_gdansk_craft_shop_valdi_lawendowa.jpg" width="500" alt="Gdansk yarn shop Valdi" /><br />
<br />
<br />
There is also a shop of ready made woollen clothes and accessories on the famous Mariacka Street (the mannequin should be wearing some knitted stockings in this weather!).<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
On the upper floor of the <a href="http://www.mhmg.gda.pl/international/index.php?lang=eng&oddzial=1">Main Town Hall</a> museum, the vintage room displays of various professions include this seamstress' room.<br />

<br />
<br />
And while in the area, it is worth visiting the art museum in Abbot's Palace and <a href="http://www.gdansk4u.pl/en/hub/place.php?PlaceID=389&_PageID=4099">the etnographic museum</a> next to it in the Oliwa park, which are just a tram ride away.<br />

Fabric toiletry bags are so much nicer than the plastic ones. The bags can be made exactly the colour and size necessary to fit all those little things needed to take along to the road.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Fvnf4cMeXmA/ULsHOOOtIXI/AAAAAAAACVo/Fz8Pp5FPgbM/s800/tettidesign_toiletry_bag_set_2.jpg" width="500" alt="Toiletry bag set" /><br />
<br />
<br />
All it took to make this bag set was actually quite a pile of bits and pieces in black and ivory: light cotton fabric, wadding, ribbons and cord, lace and tulle, elastic band and zippers... Arranged as you go and sewn together in the right order – well, mostly.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
La Belle Époque, the amazing era around the turn of the 19th and 20th century, was the source of inspiration for this project. I have collected many lovely pictures associated with that period on my Pinterest <a href="http://pinterest.com/tettidesign/la-belle-epoque">pinboard</a>.<br />

<br />
<br />
Although the times have changed, the combination of <a href="http://pinterest.com/tettidesign/ebony-ivory">black and ivory</a> never seems to go out of style and is still widely and elegantly used.<br />
